The tiny town of Clare has a number of community events throughout the year and Harris & Harris Books is regularly involved. In 2016 they were proud to support the local library to bring literature readings to the Party in the Park, in celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday. The seasonal events, including Christmas late night shopping and the ritual switching on the of the Christmas lights see Harris & Harris Books, in full decoration, hosting carol singers, passing out homemade coconut ice and sloe gin snifters.

An evening with Roger Hermiston, talking about his third book, All Behind You, Winston, saw the Clare Library heaving with enthusiastic fans of this skilled author. The event took the form of an interview, with Kate’s husband, Frank, guiding the room through the storyline with interactive video and audio clips augmenting the author’s encyclopaedic knowledge of the political movers and shakers of the time.
A collaboration with a local art gallery led to a magical summer’s evening of poetry read by the respected poet and translator, Will Stone. The heady mixture of a crowded, art laden room where the airflow from the open window was obstructed by more people leaning in to hear the moving, sometimes dark, verse delivered to a silent crowd, was a heady experience for everyone.
